I’m 28 and I live in Washington State with my husband, two cats, and my brother. I’m an evangelical Christian. I play the piano and I also tinker with the mouth harp. I knit profusely, read almost constantly, and occasionally engage in housework. I also play xbox360 quite often. I like watching BBC and Joss Whedon shows. My favorite magazine is Real Simple and my favorite books are “To Kill A Mockingbird,” “In Cold Blood,” “The Agony and the Ecstasy,” and “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.” I’m a huge Beatles fan, I dig David Crowder, and I love a lot of Indie bands. And despite the fact I have a degree in English, I have horrible grammatical skills. My husband and I want to adopt someday (and that doesn’t count the brother who lives with us), I still live where I was born but would LOVE to move, and I make a mean apple pie (or so I’m told).
Oh my gosh oh my GOSH! One of your favorite books is “A Tree Grows In Brooklyn”???!!!! How is it that I didn’t KNOW that?!! That’s my all-time most favorite book EVER. I’m not EVEN lying. We should so talk about it. (Look at me, I’m so jazzed I’m reverting to my old EXCESSIVE! USE! of ALL! CAPS! ways.)
I’ve read it hundreds of times and I still cry in all the same places. One being when Francie gets spit on by the mean kid in the schoolyard cleaning erasers.
If Jonah had been a girl, he would have been named Annie Laurie. Dude, I almost named Mary-Beth Annie Laurie.
Another favorite, and one that ruined me for all other literature for quite some time, was The Color Purple. I was so moved emotionally, spiritually and even physically by Celie’s story that I cried at the drop of a hat for almost a week. I picked up other books to read (Madame Bovary firstly) but just couldn’t get into anything. I was still *in* The Color Purple. I had to extract my brain from that story before I could sit down and even look at anything else. I see it’s on your list. Have you read it yet?
Love your story great idea to adopt giving kids a life well done. Its something ive thought about too
